Eaton Rapids man’s daily greeting connects him with neighbors
For 10 years, George Doxtader has greeted passing drivers with a thumbs-up from a bench at the corner of State and Main in Eaton Rapids. His friend Kurt Norgaard said Doxtader often starts as early as 4 a.m., when drivers wave and honk in response.
Doxtader, 78, survived two major strokes 35 years ago and has paralysis on his right side and difficulty speaking. When he is not greeting passersby, he crochets blankets and pictures using his left hand.
His pastor called him a blessing to the community. Gerontologist Sam Cradduck said the greetings help Doxtader connect with neighbors and give him a way to make a positive impact.
