Judge leaves Bannon contempt conviction in place, for now

A federal judge Wednesday rejected the Justice Department’s request to dismiss Steve Bannon’s criminal conviction for refusing to testify before the congressional committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols said prosecutors had not properly explained their reasons for seeking dismissal but allowed the government to renew its request under the law. Bannon already served a four-month prison term after a jury convicted him in 2022.

The ruling came after the Supreme Court, at prosecutors’ request, threw out an appellate decision upholding Bannon’s conviction. Dismissing the case would be largely symbolic.
