Michigan joins multistate lawsuit challenging new mail-ballot rules

Michigan joined 25 other states Wednesday in suing the U.S. Postal Service over a new rule governing mail ballots in federal elections. The coalition argues the rule improperly interferes with states’ authority to administer elections and could prevent eligible voters from receiving ballots.

The rule would require states to provide USPS with lists of voters eligible for mail ballots and would impose new envelope design requirements. Michigan absentee ballots begin mailing Sept. 19, giving clerks less than a month to meet the requirements if the rule remains in effect. The lawsuit asks a court to strike down the rule.
