Lansing YMCA announces major changes after gala honoring Magic Johnson

The YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing announced plans to rename the Westside YMCA after former Lansing Everett and Michigan State basketball star Earvin “Magic” Johnson following a Saturday gala at the Breslin Center.

The event raised more than $800,000 for YMCA scholarships and facility upgrades. The renamed facility is planned to receive new sports fields and courts, with construction expected to begin this fall.

A mural depicting the Johnson family is scheduled to be painted on the building next June by local muralist Dustin Hunt.
