New corn leaf disease found in Michigan fields

A new corn leaf disease has been identified in Michigan and may be widespread across the Great Lakes region, according to Michigan State University plant pathologist Marty Chilvers. The disease causes white spots about one-quarter to one-half inch across and can resemble herbicide injury.

Researchers have not officially confirmed the fungus species. Chilvers is urging growers to submit samples for testing, saying the disease has dried some corn silage fields faster than normal and caused yield losses where pressure is heavy.
