Supreme Court approves use of SAVE program for voter audits in Trump’s win

On Friday, the Supreme Court issued an opinion allowing states to use the Department of Homeland Security’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program to audit voter rolls, reversing a lower court ruling that had blocked the tool’s use for mass purges close to Election Day.

The majority opinion emphasized that the program is best suited for individualized checks of voter citizenship as the election approaches, and that federal law obligates the government to respond to state requests for verification. The court noted that the 90‑day moratorium on mass removals does not preclude targeted purges of non‑citizens.

Republican election officials welcomed the ruling as a win for the GOP’s emergency docket, following recent defeats in mail ballot rules and a Missouri‑Kansas City district map. DHS’s top lawyer James Percival praised the decision on social media, noting the expanded data sets and bulk loading capabilities that will improve audit accuracy.
