Officer assaulted with bear spray leads to juvenile custody in Downtown EAST LANSING

An East Lansing Police Department officer was assaulted with bear spray early Sunday morning, Sept. 13, while on foot patrol in Downtown East Lansing.

The assault was carried out by a passenger in a passing vehicle, and other ELPD officers nearby saw the attack. Officers located the suspect vehicle, conducted a felony stop, and found a stun gun, several canisters of pepper spray, and a half‑empty canister of bear and mountain lion spray.

All three people in the vehicle were under 18 and were taken into custody while a parent or guardian was contacted for each. The suspect was transferred to a youth detention center. East Lansing’s curfew ordinance prohibits anyone under 18 from being on or in any public street, highway, alley, park, plaza, public or private parking facility, vacant lot or other public place between midnight and 6 a.m., and minors under 12 are barred from those locations between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., according to the ordinance. ELPD wants the public to be aware of the city’s curfew and that it is enforced.
