Trump says press secretary Leavitt will step down this month

President Donald Trump announced that White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her post at the end of the month. Trump called her one of his "most trusted aides" and said she will become a top outside advisor and an influential voice within the Republican Party.

Leavitt, 28, took the job last year as the youngest person to ever serve as White House press secretary. She welcomed a second child, a daughter, in May and returned from maternity leave last month, alongside a two-year-old son.

In a post on X, Leavitt said she could not be "the best mom my two young children deserve" while devoting the time the job requires, calling it a "bittersweet decision." She previously worked as an assistant press secretary and speechwriter during Trump's first term, as communications director for Rep. Elise Stefanik, and as national press secretary on Trump's 2024 campaign.

It was not immediately clear who would replace her. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller called Leavitt a "close friend" and said they would continue working together.
