White House press secretary Leavitt to step down at month’s end

President Trump announced Wednesday that press secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her position at the end of August. Trump said the move would allow her to "spend more time with her beautiful young children and family." Leavitt, 28, gave birth to her second child about three months ago and had been the youngest White House press secretary in history.

In her own statement, Leavitt called the choice "the bittersweet decision" to begin a new chapter after balancing a newborn with the demands of the job. She said she intends to remain active in Republican politics, pledging to stay "a vocal advocate for MAGA and the Republican Party" and to continue opposing what she called "an increasingly extremist Democrat Party."

Trump said Leavitt will serve as an outside adviser and an influential voice as Republicans campaign in the midterm elections. Her tenure as press secretary was the second-longest among the five who have held the post under Trump.
