Battery cell production begins at Lansing factory

LG Energy Solution has begun producing lithium iron phosphate and nickel manganese cobalt battery cells at its factory in Lansing, Michigan. The facility makes large-format batteries for energy storage systems and electric vehicles.

The company said it invested more than $2 billion in the plant, which currently employs about 900 people. Employment is expected to reach 1,700 when production reaches its planned annual capacity of more than 35 gigawatt-hours.

The batteries will support utility, commercial and industrial energy storage projects, with DTE Energy among the utilities expected to use cells from the facility. The plant will also produce cells for Toyota vehicles, including the 2027 Highlander EV.
