U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods take effect as Canada vows matching response
The United States is imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products after negotiations failed to ease tensions between the two countries. The tariffs affect about 5% of Canada’s annual shipments to the United States and took effect Saturday.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would match the tariffs dollar for dollar to protect workers and businesses. The measures cover products ranging from hockey sticks to tongue depressors.
