Brazil Supreme Court probes justice Moraes’ ties to jailed banker

On Tuesday, Brazil’s Supreme Court began a session to examine ties between Justice Alexandre de Moraes and jailed banker Daniel Vorcaro, a crisis that has eclipsed the presidential election campaign. The 57‑year‑old justice was present for the plenary session, broadcast live on television and YouTube. Court president Edson Fachin said the 10 justices had the duty of guiding the institution through a difficult period.

The probe, triggered by a police report unsealed by Justice Andre Mendonca two weeks ago, revealed messages sent by Vorcaro to Moraes seeking help in the fraud investigation. Fachin called the session to examine the validity of the report and decide whether to open an investigation into Moraes. The crisis has dominated the campaign ahead of October 4 elections, expected to be a knife‑edge race between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro.

Moraes has become a constant presence in Brazil’s headlines, at the center of political battles that have angered conservatives. The senator overtook Lula in a recent poll, and the investigation into Vorcaro’s ties to Moraes could influence the outcome. The court session is more important than the World Cup final, according to Sostenes Cavalcante, leader of Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party.
