Democrats prepare legal and monitoring response to possible election interference

Democratic lawmakers are preparing for possible federal interference in the November midterm elections, including scenarios involving federal agents at polling places, ballot seizures and false claims of election fraud. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has held closed-door exercises with senators, legal experts and former officials; Rep. Joe Morelle has outlined more than 150 potential threats.

Democrats have formed a Senate election protection task force, started a bipartisan program to send congressional observers to polling places, and prepared for possible legal challenges. House Democrats have also held hearings on election security. The effort is expected to continue through vote counting and certification, up to the seating of the new Congress on Jan. 3, 2027.
