Michigan joins lawsuit challenging conditions on federal public safety grants

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel joined a coalition of 22 attorneys general and Pennsylvania in an amended lawsuit challenging immigration-enforcement conditions attached to federally authorized public safety grants.

The U.S. Department of Justice applied the conditions to programs including law enforcement and juvenile justice funding. Michigan is expected to receive about $6 million through the Byrne JAG program this year.

The coalition is asking a court to declare the conditions unlawful and block their enforcement. The lawsuit argues the requirements violate the Administrative Procedure Act and the Constitution’s spending provisions.
