Michigan residents sue Apple over alleged AirTag stalking risks

Two Southeast Michigan residents have sued Apple in federal court, alleging the company failed to adequately protect people from being stalked with AirTags.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, names residents of Madison Heights and Birmingham as plaintiffs. It claims Apple knew when it released AirTags in April 2021 that the devices could be used to track and abuse people and that adequate safeguards were not in place.

The complaint alleges one plaintiff was repeatedly tracked by a former romantic partner using concealed tracking devices, including at least one AirTag, starting in July 2026. It says the other plaintiff found an AirTag hidden under the backseat of their car in 2023 after leaving an abusive relationship.

The residents accuse Apple of violating the Michigan Consumer Protection Act and ask the court to stop alleged unlawful or unfair practices tied to the design, manufacture and sale of AirTags. Apple says AirTags are designed to discourage unwanted tracking and that phones can alert users when an unknown AirTag is traveling with them.
