Supreme Court leaves intact reversal of Roy Moore’s $8.2 million verdict

The U.S. Supreme Court declined Monday to hear former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore’s appeal, leaving in place a lower court decision that overturned an $8.2 million defamation verdict against Senate Majority PAC.

A federal jury awarded Moore the damages in 2022 over a television ad aired during his 2017 Senate campaign. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated the verdict, finding Moore had not shown the group acted with malice, a standard in defamation cases involving public figures. The PAC argued the ad was truthful.
