U.S.-Canada tariff dispute threatens higher costs for businesses and consumers

The United States imposed 50% tariffs early Saturday on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including wine, dairy, cement, clothing and hockey equipment, after trade talks collapsed. The administration said the measures respond to Canadian retaliation and aim to protect American workers and supply chains.

Canada plans to match the tariffs beginning Sept. 8, targeting products such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and electronics. The dispute affects two economies that exchanged about $880 billion in goods and services last year.

The escalating measures have raised concerns about higher consumer prices and could create a prolonged standoff, with officials signaling no immediate plans to resume negotiations.
