FEMA aid reaches northern Michigan residents after April flooding
Federal disaster aid is reaching northern Michigan homeowners and renters after historic flooding in April, with more than 500 approved applications across the region so far.
Nearly $5 million has gone to northwestern lower Michigan counties for individual assistance, including grants for home repair, home replacement and temporary rental housing. Affected residents can still apply for aid through the end of the month.
Wexford County had 171 approved applicants totaling $2.8 million, while Grand Traverse County had 72 applicants receive $714,274 as of Aug. 10. Kalkaska County reported 51 applicants receiving more than $334,000, and Benzie County reported eight applicants receiving $18,587.
Some counties also are seeking FEMA public assistance for infrastructure repairs. Local emergency officials said flooding, road drainage, culverts and land use will factor into future planning.
