War-driven fuel costs become a midterm campaign issue

Fuel prices have risen as the Iran war disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Gasoline averages $4.14 a gallon nationwide, the highest ever for this time of year, while diesel averages $5.85, also a record.

Democrats are blaming congressional Republicans and the Trump administration for the increases ahead of the November elections. The administration has called higher gasoline prices a necessary cost of preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
